In early September EPCOR will start construction work to rehabilitate the Clareview drinking water storage reservoir. This work is part of our ongoing strategy to rehabilitate and upgrade our infrastructure.

About the water reservoir

There are twelve drinking water storage reservoirs throughout the city of Edmonton. These reservoirs are located in specific areas across the city to allow for additional storage and supply of clean drinking water.

Project overview

This fall EPCOR is planning to conduct general cleaning and inspecting of the Clareview reservoir. The Clareview reservoir is located partially underground at 137 Avenue NW and Victoria Trail NW. We will be replacing and repairing sections of the reservoir roof based on the outcomes of our inspections earlier this year. We will also be replacing the hatch doors on top of the reservoir.

This construction will involve excavating and removing certain areas of grass and soil on top of and around the reservoir. While preparing the roof for construction we will be using standard dust control practices.

This reservoir rehabilitation work will take approximately four months. We are starting construction in early September and plan to be complete by December 2021. Landscape restoration work including grass seeding may occur in spring 2022 for approximately two weeks.

Construction fencing will be installed along the perimeter of the reservoir and will remain in place until December 2021. Pedestrians will not be able to walk through the reservoir site area until after the construction fencing has been removed.

Construction details

The following is a list of construction activities you can expect to see at the reservoir.

Visual

You can expect to see activity that is typical to construction on the Clareview reservoir site. This includes an increase in contractor vehicles and equipment driving along Victoria Trail NW and 137 Ave NW and entering the reservoir site.

Multiple trees on EPCOR's property will need to be trimmed in order for construction to occur at the reservoir. EPCOR's contractor will follow the City of Edmonton's requirements for tree trimming.

Traffic

There may be single lane shut downs on 137 Ave and Victoria Trail at the beginning and end of the construction project during soil removal and restoration. Once confirmed, details will be listed here.

Noise

This project will create typical noise associated with construction. The work will involve the use of additional equipment and machinery onsite, including:

  • Excavators during soil removal
  • Gravel or dump trucks to move soil
  • Bobcats
  • Truck and vehicle traffic
  • Concrete surface preparation machinery

We will comply with the City of Edmonton's Community Standards Bylaw for Noise Control. This permits noise from construction work to occur from 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays and Holidays. If it is necessary to temporarily exceed acceptable noise levels, we will work with the City of Edmonton to obtain the necessary permits.

Worksite

All of the proposed work will take place within EPCOR's property line. The work site will be fenced and maintained in a safe and secure manner. All construction activities will be performed in accordance with the City of Edmonton's bylaws, Occupational Health and Safety requirements, as well as EPCOR's health, safety and environmental procedures and guidelines.
