Schnieder Electric on behalf of Alberta Transportation
The Alberta Transportation Road Weather Information System (RWIS) project was a coordinated design-build service with a full turn-key solution awarded to Schneider Electric. It was completed by a reliable, safety orientated and dependable project team, which proved that it's flexible resourcing to adapt to a shifting schedule.
Alberta Transportation sought to expand the RWIS network to 38 additional sites on top of the 80 stations across Alberta to better accommodate roadway maintenance requirements throughout the year. RWIS provides real-time data for snow ploughing, sanding/salting for targeted areas. The system benefits local area forecasts for specific trouble areas in the province. This results in safer roads across Alberta for traffic users and provides enhanced weather information.
EPCOR Technologies was contracted by Schneider Electric to design the site, provide traffic accommodation strategies and electrical components of the RWIS systems. The true success of this project however lies in the overall collaboration and coordination between Technologies, Schneider Electric, Alberta Transportation District staff and other road builders. Technologies performed installations that included the RWIS tower, underground civil works, road sensors, tower sensors, system testing, configuration and commissioning.
Our team comprised of utilizing staff from Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain and Signal Technicians. Technologies is motivated and determined in gaining technical understanding of Road Weather Information Systems, which was a new experience for us at the time. In maintaining a strong relationship with Schneider Electric, Technologies was competent in completing the work to contract requirements with significant emphasis on planning and preparation while also ensuring our construction team that had the skills and interest to tackle the project.
