Alberta's Climate Leadership Plan—what does it mean for you?

You may have heard about changes coming your way. As part of Alberta's plan to take action on climate change, the provincial government is implementing the Climate Leadership Implementation Act (Bill 20). To help support a lower-carbon, energy efficient economy, you'll see a new carbon tax on your monthly natural gas bill starting in January, 2017.

Alberta's Climate Leadership Implementation Act (Bill 20)

Carbon – a key contributor to climate change – will be taxed, based on consumption, to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Over the first five years of paying your carbon levy, the provincial government will reinvest all funds into our economy through renewable energy, green infrastructure and energy efficiency programs.

The ultimate goal? To combat climate change. Together.

How does the carbon levy impact my natural gas bill?

Whether you're an Encor customer or otherwise, all natural gas retailers in Alberta will be required to charge the exact same carbon levy. In January 2017, the levy will be $1.011/GJ and the rate you'll pay is based on your monthly energy usage.

The carbon levy will be on a separate line on your monthly natural gas bill so you'll know exactly how much you're being charged.

Any changes on my electricity bill?

No changes here.

Environmental initiatives and fees are already built into electricity at the source, which means you won't see a carbon tax charge on your power bill from any retailer.

How do I keep my costs down?

If you're already taking steps to reduce your household energy usage, you're on the right track. Start by turning down the heat when you're away from home or installing a smart thermostat. The more energy efficient you are, the lower your carbon tax will be every month. And the lower your carbon footprint.
