The Niagara Waste Landfill Gas Utilization Project is located in Niagara Falls, Ontario at the Niagara Waste System Landfill and was commissioned in March, 2002.

About the Landfill Gas Utilization Project

Abitibi Bowater Paper Mill, located in Thorold, Ontario, uses the gas captured from the Landfill as fuel for the boilers in the Mill's steam plant. They manufacture newsprint from 100% recycled fiber.

The Landfill Gas Project captures and processes the gas from the East Landfill and, from there, it's cleaned, dehydrated, compressed, and conveyed through a dedicated pipeline, which is owned by Enbridge.

What are ISO certified greenhouse gas (GHG) offsets?

Greenhouse gas offsets are certificates representing the reduction of one metric ton (2,205 lbs) of carbon dioxide emissions, seen as the leading cause of climate change.

These certificates are ISO certified and used to help reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by supporting emission reduction projects such as the Niagara Waster Systems Landfill Gas Utilization Project. By supporting GHG offsets, you help lessen the impact of your own carbon footprint and help further the production of clean, renewable energy.

These GHG offsets are bundled with the natural gas that's delivered to your home by your natural gas delivery company, in a quantity that matches the portion of energy you opted to buy.

If you choose Encor 100% green natural gas, for instance, you'll buy enough GHG offsets to match 100% of the natural gas you buy through your energy plan. Once you buy these GHG offsets, we will retire them on your behalf so that no other consumer can use them.
