Niagara Waste Landfill Gas Utilization Project

The Niagara Waste Landfill Gas Utilization Project is in Niagara Falls, Ontario at the Niagara Waste System Landfill.

The project involves capturing gas from the landfill to be cleaned, dehydrated, and compressed. The captured gas is sent through a dedicated pipeline, owned by Enbridge, to Abitibi Bowater Paper Mill, located in Thorold, Ontario. The mill uses the gas as fuel for the boilers in its steam plant.

More green natural gas. Less greenhouse gas.

When you choose Encor green natural gas, you're buying ISO certified greenhouse gas (GHG) offsets from the Niagara Waste Landfill Gas Utilization Project. Greenhouse gas offsets are certificates representing the reduction of one metric ton (2,205 lbs) of carbon dioxide emissions, which are seen as the leading cause of climate change.

These certificates are used to help reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by supporting renewable energy sources and emission reduction projects such as the Niagara Waste Landfill Gas Utilization Project. By supporting GHG offsets, you help lessen the impact of your own carbon footprint and help further the production of clean, renewable alternative energy sources.

These GHG offsets are bundled with the natural gas that's delivered to your home by your natural gas delivery company, in a quantity that matches the portion of energy you opted to buy.

If you choose Encor 100% green energy natural gas, for example, you'll buy enough GHG offsets to match 100% of the natural gas you buy through your energy plan. Once you buy these GHG offsets, we will retire them on your behalf so that no other consumer can use them.

Green electricity projects

When you choose Encor green electricity, you're buying Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) that are associated with the electricity produced by the Taylor hydro facility. By purchasing electricity supported by RECs, you help grow renewable electricity production and support other environmental benefits, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

*GHG Offsets are audited by a third party on behalf of Encor to ensure retirement of GHG Offsets are completed in accordance with our Terms & Conditions.
