Made in Alberta water powered green energy
It feels good to go green, especially when it’s 100% homegrown. The
Taylor Hydro facility allows Encor to provide its customers with green energy plans. The Southern Alberta facility, located beside the Taylor Coulee Chute near the town of Magrath, is owned and operated by TransAlta through its subsidiary, Canadian Hydro Developers.
Taylor Hydro has been operating since 2000 with a generating capacity of 13 MW. The facility diverts a portion of the flow from the irrigation canal to its turbine during irrigation season (April to October)—generating an impressive 45,000 MWh annually (on average)!
The electricity produced in the Taylor Hydro facility is sold to the Power Pool of Alberta, which is then accessed by Alberta consumers like you.
Renewable energy certificates for alternative energy sources
When you choose green electricity from Encor, you're buying Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) that are associated with the electricity produced by the Taylor Hydro facility. These RECs represent one megawatt hour (MWh) of energy generated from a clean, renewable source. In our case, this source is hydroelectricity.
This method of generation creates little to no carbon by-products in its production of sustainable energy. Purchasing electricity supported by RECs helps grow renewable energy resources and renewable power generation, and has other environmental benefits such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
These RECs are bundled with the electricity that is delivered to your home by your electricity distribution company, in a quantity that matches the portion of energy you opted to buy with your plan.
Let’s say you chose Encor 100% alternative electricity sources for home. What you’re really buying is enough RECs to match 100% of the electricity you buy through your energy plan. Once you buy these RECs, we will retire them on your behalf so that no other consumer can use them.
ECOLOGO certified products for renewable resources
Encor by EPCOR is also ECOLOGO certified*. This means all of our green electricity plans have reduced environmental impact thanks to an independent, objective review and certification by one of the most trusted ecolabelling programs in the world.
Green natural gas projects
When you choose Encor green natural gas, you're buying ISO certified greenhouse gas (GHG) offsets from the
Niagara Waste Landfill Gas Utilization Project. By supporting GHG offsets, you help lessen the impact of your own carbon footprint and help further the production of clean, renewable energy.
*ECOLOGO Certification applies to RECs only. GHG Offsets are audited by a third party on behalf of Encor to ensure retirement of GHG Offsets are completed in accordance with our Terms & Conditions.
