If you haven’t actively chosen a competitive energy plan, chances are you’re on the Rate of Last Resort (RoLR) – the default regulated rate. It’s not your best option.
Encor by EPCOR offers the same energy you use today, but at a better price. Our fixed rate plan could save you over $245/year compared to the RoLR.* Plus, when you bundle electricity and natural gas, you’ll get $50 off your bill with promo code FALL50.
How it works - Fast & Easy
Choose your plan: Pick between our fixed rate (steady monthly costs) or floating rate (market-based pricing). Market tip : As of September 2025, electricity and gas rates are stable and low – so if you’re comfortable with a little fluctuation, the floating rate could be a smart choice. But, fixed rates are handy because you can set them and forget them. The choice is up to you!
Bundle electricity and natural gas: One provider, one bill, more savings.
Enter code FALL50: Save even more with an extra $50 off your bill. Prefer to sign up by phone? Our energy experts are happy to help.
We’ll handle the switch: We can notify your current provider and ensure a smooth transition. No service interruptions.
Enjoy the perks: From gift cards to exclusive events, we love showing our appreciation.

In Alberta, we have what's referred to as a deregulated electricity market, which means that you have the freedom to choose an energy retailer for your utilities.
Those who do not have a plan with a competitive retailer (like Encor) are automatically placed on the Rate of Last Resort (RoLR), formerly known as the Regulated Rate Option (RRO).
The RoLR replaces the fluctuating month-to-month RRO rate. It’s designed to give households stability, but it’s also considered a default or “last resort” rate. For some Albertans, EPCOR is the RoLR energy supply provider and the rate they receive is based on the fixed rate that has been reviewed and approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission. The average RoLR across Alberta from January 1, 2025 until December 31, 2026 is 12.03 cents/kWh.
Many Albertans are unaware that they have options to switch to a competitive plan that could offer more benefits, like lower rates and additional perks.
Many people don't know that they are on the RoLR, and don’t realize they could be getting the same energy at a lower rate by making the switch to Encor by EPCOR.
To confirm what rate you're on, look at your bill, you will see the terms “Rate of Last Resort” or “RoLR.”

We’re glad you asked! EPCOR offers consumers two utility service options: Encor (the competitive rate option) and EPCOR Energy Alberta (the Regulated Rate Option or RRO). Although both energy retailers are part of the same parent company, Encor provides both fixed and floating rates (variable) for electricity and natural gas with plans that you’re not locked into and that you can cancel anytime without penalty.
We pride ourselves on having one of the lowest administration fees amongst major utility providers.
Whether you choose a Regulated or Competitive Retailer, your distribution company and the delivery portion of your energy bill won't change from one retailer to the next as it is based on the community you are in and the cost to service that area. You can learn more here.
*Based on January ROLR electricity rates posted on UCA website average of 12.03 cents/kWh, minus Encor’s July 2025 rate of 8.63 cents/kWh, multiplied by 610kWh/mo average usage, multiplied by 12 months/year. (0.1203-0.0863)x 610x12 = $248.90 saved per year.
Customers are free to purchase natural gas services or electricity services from a retailer of their choice. For a list of retailers, visit ucahelps.alberta.ca or call 310-4822 (toll free in Alberta).
