Carl knew it was just a matter of time before he was beaten up and robbed again. The 16 year old had run away from home three years ago and had been living on the streets ever since. He knew he needed to get his life on track before he became just another statistic.

Joe Cloutier, Executive Director of the Inner City Youth Development Association, is there for kids like Carl when they are ready to receive help.  "These youth are living on the margins of society," explains Joe. "They are at high risk for exploitation and are continuously accessing society's social systems just to survive. We work with them to break that cycle."

-Joe Cloutier, Executive Director of the Inner City Youth Development Association

The Inner City Youth Development Association provides high-risk youth with educational programs to help create positive change in their lives. For over 20 years, they have been providing Edmonton's marginalized youth with formal education combined with long-term support for housing, financial referrals and other emergency services.

A recent grant of just over $11,000 from the EPCOR Community Essentials Council will help pay the wages of one youth worker for Inner City Youth's support programs.

"The support programs that we offer help to build a foundation for the youth," explains Joe. "In addition to helping our youth work towards a high school diploma, we also assist them developing the life skills necessary to prevent their return to a life on the street."
