EPCOR Wastewater Operations Underway for Imperial Oil's Kearl Project

January 15, 2014
Published In: Wastewater

Under contract with Imperial Oil, EPCOR operates the plant where domestic wastewater is treated for the Kearl site. The treated wastewater is then transported to a pond where it is held for reuse within Kearl's industrial processes. By processing and reusing the treated wastewater, the Kearl operation reduces the need to take water from natural sources, such as groundwater or rivers and avoids discharging effluent to rivers.

While this is EPCOR's first contract with Imperial Oil, EPCOR has been growing its presence in the Wood Buffalo region and working in partnership with oil sands companies since 2003. Beyond supplying potable water and domestic wastewater treatment services in camp environments, EPCOR also has experience in infrastructure development, water reuse for refinery, and industrial process water pilots.
