How We're Taking A Stand on Sustainability

When you deliver clean water and energy to people every minute of the day, each moment is an opportunity to build a better future for our environment, our people, and our communities.

"EPCOR truly is more than just a utility — we are an environmental company," explains Derek, EPCOR's senior manager of project development for green initiatives. "We are constantly pursuing environmental opportunities where we can apply our expertise."

Derek leads a team that's responsible for exploring green initiatives and working cross-company with our Green Energy Committee. The group brings every part of EPCOR — electricity, water, drainage and natural gas — together to move forward on environmental projects.

How we're making a difference

Watershed protection

EPCOR's waterworks system is an EnviroVista Champion, a designation assigned by the Alberta government for our efforts to meet a higher standard of environmental excellence.

Clean water made with clean energy

We are proposing to build a 12-megawatt solar farm to help power our drinking water treatment facilities in Edmonton. We've also added a small solar installation at the Hugh J. Bolton service centre.

Helping customers make greener choices

Encor by EPCOR offers Chirp Green Energy plans and smart grid technologies that allows home energy monitoring to manage consumption.

Flood mitigation

We are developing a long-term flood mitigation plan to ensure our stormwater system and water treatment facilities can adapt to changing climate patterns.

Innovative uses for wastewater

We are investing in technologies to extract phosphorous, re-use water for industrial operations and heat energy from Edmonton's wastewater treatment.

Taking a stand on sustainability

In early 2018, EPCOR was lead sponsor of the IPCC Cities & Climate Change Science Conference held in Edmonton.

We aren't stopping there. As Edmonton's local water expert that's responsible for the city's entire water utility cycle, we take special pride in our role as steward for the North Saskatchewan River. That's why EPCOR and the River Valley Alliance are bringing back EPCOR RiverFest in summer 2018 to connect our communities with our river.

That's why we're proud to be recognized as one of the Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada for 2018. The ranking by Corporate Knights magazine recognizes sustainability-minded businesses that go beyond simple cost considerations to incorporate social and ecological impacts.
