Remembering Hugh J. Bolton

A Message from the Chair of the Board

This past week, we lost a mentor, a friend and one of the most impactful leaders Edmonton has seen in a generation.

Hugh J. Bolton brought outstanding leadership and vision to many internationally recognized companies, boards and organizations that had the benefit of working with him. He inspired top leaders across all sectors, supported the growth of our future leaders and showed unwavering compassion through the numerous causes he supported in our community.

EPCOR was fortunate to have Hugh as our Chair of the Board from 2000 to 2018. During his tenure, he guided the company through tremendous growth and success across Canada and the United States, building EPCOR's reputation as a top North American utility and delivering over $2.5 billion in dividends to our sole shareholder, the City of Edmonton.

His impact was seen in 2004, as EPCOR received the National Governance Award from the Conference Board of Canada, recognizing excellence and innovation among Canada's best public and private sector boards; and again in 2017 as Hugh himself received the Peter Dey National Governance Achievement Award, highlighting his contributions to transforming the way Canadian companies are governed.

Some of the best companies we know today, and some of the most caring organizations in our community, are exponentially better because of Hugh J. Bolton.

When Hugh retired in 2018, we were pleased to honor him by renaming the EPCOR North Service Centre as the Hugh J. Bolton Centre, while the City of Edmonton paid tribute by naming the roadway leading to the facility as Hugh Bolton Way.

We will greatly miss Hugh's leadership and friendship, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Together, we will remember his legacy as one of our most celebrated leaders and generous contributors to our community.
