Selected highlights from EPCOR's 2006 Annual Report:
Power
- 2006 marked the first full year of production from Genesee 3 and the commissioning of our Kingsbridge I wind project in Ontario.
- EPCOR also completed the sale to the Partnership of EPCOR's 50.15 per cent interest in Frederickson Power L.P. It helped strengthen the Partnership's position in the U.S. market through its November acquisition of Primary Ventures LLC, welcoming 135 new employees to the family.
- EPCOR announced a $245 million investment in new power generation at the site of our former Clover Bar Generating Station.
- Following the success of the internationally-recognized Genesee 3 plant, EPCOR signed an agreement with the TransAlta Corporation to pursue development of the 450MW Keephills 3 project. The Keephills unit will - like Genesee 3 - employ supercritical technology and emissions controls that dramatically improve environmental performance.
- As part of the Canadian Clean Power Coalition, EPCOR committed expertise and up to $11 million to the front-end engineering and design of a utility-scale integrated gasification combined cycle facility to be conducted by the CCPC.
- Power distribution and transmission operations again achieved top quartile performance for operating reliability.
- To accommodate Edmonton's growing electricity needs, EPCOR is expanding the Victoria substation and installing a new 10.5 kilometre-long underground high-voltage transmission cable that will serve downtown.
Water
- In 2006, EPCOR treated and distributed safe drinking water to about one million people in 50 communities without incident, and developed and managed wastewater systems that are helping protect the environment.
- The Britannia Mine Water Treatment Facility opened in June and has since treated over four billion litres of water, removing 255,000 kilograms of heavy metals and contaminants.
- EPCOR operates an upgraded wastewater treatment plant in Okotoks, Alberta. Its performance is such that the treated effluent returned to the river is of higher quality than the river water.
- EPCOR also purchased a local water utility that serves 3,500 residents in the French Creek Area of B.C. and is completing a number of capital projects to improve water quality.
- EPCOR focused on a $140 million capacity addition at the E.L Smith Water Treatment Plant. The project is designed to increase the regional water supply by about 25 per cent, a level we judge to be sufficient to accommodate 15 years' worth of population and economic growth in the greater-Edmonton region.
Looking ahead
- In 2006, EPCOR became an Official Supplier to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and the Canadian Olympic Team.
- EPCOR delivered two new programs: the Sports Excellence Award, which provided funding to organizations that help young athletes towards achieving excellence in their sport, and the Youth Excellence Award, which provided support to young people who are pursuing excellence in fields such as art, scholastic achievement, humanitarianism, and culture.
- Major projects planned include the first phase of the Clover Bar project, construction of Keephills 3, the E.L. Smith capacity addition, and construction of a major power transmission line in the City of Edmonton.
