EPCOR's environmental vision

EPCOR is actively involved in many projects designed to empower North American markets to reduce the environmental impacts of power generation and water treatment.

EPCOR has always been a leader in the creation and trading of real, verifiable greenhouse gas emission credits (offsets).

The Carbon Reduction Offset Project (CROP)
EPCOR is working with Parkland Agri-Services and Alberta farmers to create a new source of value for agricultural producers. Through changes in land management practices, producers are creating real, verifiable credits and the companies are developing a model for auditing and aggregating the credits for sale to buyers.
Green Municipal Corp
In 2006, EPCOR entered into an agreement with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' Green Municipal Corporation to purchase greenhouse gas emission reductions resulting from the Cedar Road Landfill in the Regional District of Nanaimo.
Taylor NGL
Based near Picture Butte, Alberta, Taylor NGL is delivering offsets from 2006 to 2010 based on greenhouse gas reductions from the geological storage of CO2.

EPCOR also advocates for market structures that incent power and water conservation.

EPCOR believes governments should mandate that new Canadian power generation come from the Best Available Technology Economically Achievable (BATEA) - a technology that can achieve superior emissions performance and that has been demonstrated to be economically feasible through successful commercial application across a range of regions and fuel types.

EPCOR advocates that all consumers need to pay the true cost of power and water. At the end of the day, passing on the true cost to customers is critical because it sends necessary signals, reminding us to conserve and make more prudent use of our resources.

Time to get serious about water

EPCOR's priorities are to:

work to dispel the myth of a limitless abundance of water in southern Canada.
enforce laws presently on the books so water operators have incentives to invest in infrastructure and innovative water quality systems.
give communities the right tools to meet the challenges they face.
EPCOR believes this requires challenging existing service delivery models, and building partnerships between governments and the private sector. Working together, well-structured partnerships can help deliver improved quality, lower costs to communities.
Finally, we have to move toward better integration of watershed management strategies with larger land-use policy.
